Dayton 7/7/2016

Our plan for today had been to drive over to Pat's Uncle Ray and Aunt Dorothy's house in Centerville.  However, when we arrived we tried to call them and were just getting their voice mail.  Then this morning someone answered but it was one of Aunt Dorothy's nieces with the news that Uncle Ray had fallen and broken his hip and was in the hospital.  So we arranged to visit him and Aunt Dorothy in Miami Valley hospital.

We did get to see them.  Dorothy looks pretty much the same and Ray was a little worse for wear and was very groggy from his pain medication.  We did have a nice visit and it was good to see them.  Both Ray and Dorothy will be 89 this fall.

After visiting with them we decided to go to lunch so I took a look at the recommendations on Trip Adviser and found that the Dorothy Lane Market (DLM) was rated as #1 out of the 864 restaurants in Dayton.  DLM started out as a small local grocery store in 1948.  When we were stationed at W-P AFB 40 some years ago, it was a larger and very nice grocery store with some specialty items.  As it turns out now, it is a Whole Foods type market with an extensive deli, bakery and prepared foods sections and has a dining area.  You decide what you would like from a choice of about 8 - 10 soups, pizzas, deli sandwiches, prepared food (meatloaf, stew, roast chicken, etc.) and they prepare and heat it for you and bring it to you in the dining area.  I had a cup of seafood gumbo, Italian sub and macaroni salad and Pat had a grilled cheese sandwich with a dish of fresh fruit.  It was really very good and the variety of things you could order was phenomenal.  I can see why they were rated #1.

After lunch we decided to stop by Calvary Cemetery were Pat's Mom and Dad and a lot of her relatives are buried.  It took us a few minutes of driving around before we found their graves but we did find them

After this we decided to see if our old apartments were still around, so we went looking for them.  Here is a photo of our first apartment where we lived when we were first married.

Still looks the same.  We had a small upstairs unit where we lived for a year.  With David on the way, we decided we needed a larger apartment with space for a washer and dryer.  This is a photo of our apartment at 1736B Arlin Place.

This is wj=re we were living when David was born.  It is a town house type unit with a living room, eating area, kitchen and 1/2 bath on the first floor, two bedrooms and a bath on the second floor and a full basement where we were able to install a washer and dryer.  There was even a laundry shute in both bathrooms that deposited the dirty laundry in the basement.  This development still looks very nice and it has to be at least 50 years old.

Tomorrow we leave for Bloomington, IL, to visit Pat's brother Tim and his family.
